I have to admit that I’m obsessed with the myth of the centaur Chiron. When I first began researching him everything I discovered resonated with me. Turns out this was a fitting obsession because in my natal chart the comet Chiron, that gets it’s namesake from the myth, is nine degrees away from my Sun and five from my North Node. In other words, my mission and my vitality revolve around this lil’ bugger. Actually not so little and, well, as far as comets go, Chiron is quite large.
According to the Greek myth, Chiron was a centaur known for his knowledge and skill with medicine. Centaurs were commonly wild, hot headed, indulgent with drink, lusty, and for the most part considered uncultured hooligans. Chiron was the black sheep of centaurs and his intelligence and peaceful nature are attributed to his being taught by Apollo and Artemis in his younger days. Chiron grew to be a great healer, astrologer, respected oracle, and highly praised teacher and tutor. Among his pupils were many well known heroes including Achilles and Asclepius. One day Heracles was forced to shoot many arrows (poisoned with the blood of the Hydra) to drive back wild centaurs that were attacking him, Pholus, and Chiron. Chiron was accidentally hit in the thigh by one of the arrows. Ironically, though he was a master healer, he could not heal himself. To escape the pain he left it to Heracles to arrange a bargain with Zeus to exchange Chiron’s immortality for the life of Prometheus. Chiron was honored with a place in the sky as the constellation Centaurus; and according to one legend, he was made a promise by Zeus that as long as he was needed as a trainer of demigods, he will exist in this world.
November 1, 1977 is the day the comet Chiron was discovered by Charles Kowal in Pasadena, California. We can see from drawing a birth chart of that day that Chiron appears to be a shock or attack that holds us in the 4th house preventing us from getting to the 5th house of self expression and creativity. Does this wound also pierce our reality to unveil a new one, a new reality we now have to face to move on with our lives? Most astrologers, including myself, believe so; and fittingly, many of the famous surrealist artists have a strong Chiron-Mars connection in their natal charts.
Some astrologers have dubbed Chiron the “inconvenient benefic,” and I wonder if the same notion can be applied to the recent political climate of our country. Although it’s all too easy to want to ransack Trump, the truth is that the fruits of capitalistic maleficence have been ripe for the picking in America’s political system for many years; and if we listen, we can hear Chiron’s whispers blowing in our ears these cloudy nights, perhaps saying that this is the time for the people of our country to look at an American “super” reality, to see all parts of our political system as they really are.
It’s 6:58 EST this evening the 31st of January, 2017 and I’ve just drawn up a 13 Sign Chart of the sky. The comet Chiron is at 0 degrees Pisces conjunct Venus, the Moon, and Mars. Mars is directing our energy towards Chiron in a very visceral way with all the water influence of the Moon and Pisces. Chiron, the Moon, and Venus are all square Saturn in Ophiuchus which is an influence that makes it a good time to hone our power and decide our next steps.
What are we going to do now that we’ve been hit by a poison arrow?
