Transiting Moon Gets Us in Tip Top Shape for the New Year

By Natalie Miller

According to the 13 sign astrology system, the Moon entered the sign of Capricorn, and the stars of Capricorn (the beauty of the 13 sign system), yesterday at 8:15 pm in New York/ 5:15 pm in LA.  After such an emotionally rambunctious year and with Mercury still drifting backward (retrograde till January 9th) on a useless hunt through Sagittarius’ battlefield of carnage, Capricorn’s hard handed leadership may be just what we need to collect ourselves in time for the new year: “Capricorn attempts to order the Moon around like a drill sergeant thinking that a stern, implacable, and systemic environment is the best way to deal with emotions,” says Eric Seligson, who maintains

“The otherwise uncontrollable subconscious whims must travel through the filter of Capricorn’s practical approach to their expression,” Seligson says.  “The Moon wants to tap into a myriad of feelings, while Capricorn wrestles them down to the one or two that are relevant to the situation.”  So it’s a great time to think about what left over emotions are relevant to take into the new year and which ones we can happily toss to a bewildered Mercury, and not look back.

To help out the process, propitious Jupiter trines the Moon at 9:30 tonight in New York, 6:30 in LA.  The trine in the chart is considered one of flow.  So Jupiter helps Capricorn “subject our emotions to a purpose, with the ambition of using them to achieve practical goals, building a solid structure,” says Seligson.  This creates a fortuitous atmosphere for setting New Year’s resolutions because what the Moon really wants to do is “erode the wall between the conscious and unconscious.”

“One good thing about the Capricorn Moon can be its emotional honesty,” Seligson says.  “What you see is what you get. You may not like it, but the Capricorn Moon can have your best interests at heart.”  So the fire works we usually feel when welcoming the new year may be subdued to just party horns this year, but that’s the sound of the Moon in Capricorn.
