Mercury is the smallest planet in the solar system but, because it is the closest planet to the Sun, it casts the biggest shadow. It is never more than 28 degrees away from te sun and being so close to the gravitational center of the system it exerts a very strong magnetic pull. Mercury retrograde happens when the planet passes between the Earth and the Sun. The planet is visible during morning and evening twilight hours and during the period it looks like it is moving backwards in the sky.
Mercury’s orbit is about 84 days, so it turns retrograde more frequently than any other planet in the system. This happens three times a year. The fourth Mercury Retrograde Cycle of 2016 occurs in Capricorn (15o 08″) on December 19 at 5:56 a.m. Eastern Time. Astrologically, this happens under the capricious eyes of the earth-sign Capricorn and will move into fire-sign when Mercury goes direct in Sagittarius (28o 51″) on January 8, 2017 at 4:43 am Eastern Time.
Capricorn is ruled by Saturn, which is also rules Aquarius. This particular Mercury retrograde will be intense because it corresponds with close alignment to Pluto and will be getting some blowback from the fixed star Vega.
Mercury rules Virgo and Gemini, which is the sign of duality. It represents the mind and intellect. Mercury is retrograde 19% of the time.
When Mercury changes direction it makes its closest pass to our planet and a huge magnet passes between the Earth and the Sun. This may affect electrical devices and people’s nervous systems, which run on electricity.
“The most frustrating effect is miscommunication,” says Nina Marie of Soulfully Real Healings “Phone calls get dropped electrical devices don’t work. And we take everything with a defensive ear. Take an extra 10 seconds before you act or speak. Be conscious to what is actually going on. And it will be over sooner than you know.”
“When this planet retrogrades, these areas spin out of control and disturb our electronic and our internal processing,” Integrated Energy Therapy Master Teacher Reverend Debra Soul says. “We can lose data, process data slower our internal and external connection, which includes thinking slower, processing communication slower, slower connections via our electronics and our thinking patterns.
“Typical communication becomes unreliable, filled with misinformation where important data is missing or misunderstood,” Soul says. “It slows our connections personally, via computers, phones and at our airports. “You may send a text or email and it may not be received or it may be received and misconstrued. You can speak your words, but the words you are saying, may not be interpreted as it is being implied. People are not being fully aware or present as they are typically or should be.
Soul advises people to buy any electronics or make any auto repairs before retrograde hits. “Back up your hard drive, plan ahead, have empathy, be prepared for angrier people and miscommunication,” she adds.
Keeping track of Mercury retrograde periods can allow you to increase productivity and not get stuck in any dead end situations.
“I would not sign any contract with people during that time,” advises Armida Realm of Lady Armida’s Psychic Realm. “Because when the phase is over most people are trapped in a situation they do not want.”
“Mercury commands over all types of communication,” Soul agrees. “It rules all trails of papers to legal documentations to computer codes, as well as transportation, shipping, and travel.”
Mercury Retrograde occurs when it is moving backwards, into its shadow. Reverend Soul advises people to watch what they say during Mercury Retrograde.
“A lot of miscommunication happens during this time, “Lady Armida says. “I have cast spells for lovers during the phase many time. But many couples seem to argue during this time. If you are planning to start a new romance during this time you can either but heads what most people do but I also find that people think they are on a great relationship as they are smitten and not paying attention to the things being said.”
When communication is challenged by Mercury Retrograde, all the advisors agree that it is time for introspection and inner work.
“It is a good time to re-,” Soul says. “Reconnect, reassess, revisit, readdress, redo, and redesign our plans. Life is short; we are typically always busy –always rushing. This period gives us some time to reflect on our needs, wants and desires. Mercury retrograde allows us to stop, look, listen, and redirect our energies more productively when we listen closely. Mercury also helps us find closure to certain situations that tend to need to have closure.
There is a feel of a difficult Mercury-Saturn aspect about Mercury retrograde, so you can also expect to dwell on things, reminisce about the past, or unexpectedly meet up with people from your past.
“Our final Mercury Retrograde of the year brings hope not fear,” says Angel Communicator Morgana Starr. “The Angels have arranged the very planets to support our final cleansing so we can move into 2017 with grace and ease. To do this, we must look deep and shine a light on past beliefs, eliminating on all levels, those things which weigh us down.”
“The hardest thing for many to leave behind is playing the part of the victim,” Starr says. “Your life is your creation, it is time to own it, clean it and make necessary repairs. This Mercury Retrograde gives us the chance to take those angry, hurt and gloomy feelings and write them down, or dance them out. Weave that emotional straw into wings of gold. It can be a cathartic and even joyful experience when you make it a habit.”
“A final clearing in 2016, will usher in a new year of light,” Starr advises. “Holding on will create an unbearable heaviness. The old ground beneath our feet has crumbled. We can fall or we can fly. Which will you choose?”
“The last retrograde of the year is the time to embrace the things that come up and look deeper within,” says Nina Marie. “They aren’t coming up for no reason. There are deep-seeded fears or traumas that need to be reflected on and dealt with for self-healing. Yes we hate it, but growing pains are never easy.”
